Ants raise aphids for their honeydew: "Upon reaching the aphid, the ant begins to stroke the smaller insect with its feelers. The aphid responds by releasing a drop of a sugary substance called honeydew. The ant eagerly licks up the honeydew. Then the ant gently picks up the aphid in its jaws and carries it to another leaf. Through careful application, crack and crevice treatment can be safer for children and pets since the chemical is put in a smaller, more difficult to reach areas. Crack and crevices areas include areas behind electrical outlet covers and gaps where door and window trim abut walls. Baseboards and cabinet bottoms are also important areas to treat. Be careful about dusting around major appliances; you do not want to apply dust in an area where it might be whipped up by a fan and dispersed in the air. With white-footed ant infestations, you should apply dust between and under rolled fiberglass insulation. Applying on top of these areas in attics will help, but you need to get beneath it to be most effective. The best insecticide dusts to use are DRIONE® Dust and Delta Dust. DRIONE® Dust is a mix of pyrethrins and silica gel and quickly kills scorpions, spiders, and others. Delta Dust is waterproof, and this makes it better suited to damp environments than DRIONE®, which must be kept dry. DRIONE® is the dust of choice for professionals when treating dry areas. Some professionals will mix both Delta Dust and DRIONE® to treat larger areas to reduce the cost and to expose the pests to two different insecticides, which helps in overcoming any immunity and makes for a more effective treatment. You can apply dusts to cracks and crevices by using a hand bellows duster. Dusting in Attics and Crawl Spaces Apply dusts by broadcast method is often preferred in enclosed areas such as attics and crawl spaces that are not living areas. You will want to apply one to two pounds of dust per 500 to 1000 square feet. If you store items in the attics, you want to make sure that you will not contaminate them. Also, ensure that you will not apply dust on top of drop ceilings where the dust could drop into living areas. A good way to dust attics and crawl spaces is with a combination of a pound of Delta Dust and a pound of DRIONE® Dust. The combination makes for a quicker kill and a greater residual effect. You will need a broadcast duster, such as the Dustin Mizer, to apply the dust with an appropriate dust mask. Always follow label! Dusters and Applicators You can treat cracks and crevices with a hand bellows duster. Make sure when you apply the dust that you do not let it accumulate into visible piles; bugs can move around piles but cannot avoid a thin, lethal layer. The Dustin Mizer is a hand, crank duster. Fill the hopper and turn the crank, and the dust will be dispersed three to six feet.
