Silverfish
SIZE: 1/2 to 1 inch (12.7-25.4mm)
COLOR: Brown or silver-gray
DESCRIPTION: Silverfish are small, soft insects without wings. The
abdomen has three filaments extending from it. Silverfish are not often
seen by homeowners because they are nocturnal and can run very swiftly.
Occasionally, they are found in bathtubs. They crawl in seeking food or
moisture and can't climb out. These insects prefer vegetable matter with
a high carbohydrate and protein content. However, indoors they will feed
on almost anything. A partial list includes dried beef, flour, starch,
paper, gum, glue, cotton, linen, rayon, silk, sugar, molds and breakfast
cereals.
HABITAT: Silverfish normally live outdoors under rocks, bark and leaf
mold, in the nests of birds and mammals, and in ant and termite nests.
However, many are found in houses and are considered a pest, or at least
a nuisance, by homeowners. Usually they are found trapped in a bathtub,
sink, or washbasin.
LIFE CYCLE: Adults lay eggs in small groups containing a few to 50 eggs.
The eggs are very small and deposited in cracks and crevices. A female
normally lays less than 100 eggs during her lifespan of two to eight years.
Under ideal conditions, the eggs hatch in two weeks, but may take up to
two months to hatch.
The young nymphs are very much like the adults except for size. Several
years are required before they are sexually mature, and they must mate
after each molt if viable eggs are to be produced. Populations do not
build up rapidly because of their slow development rate and the small
number of eggs laid.
TYPE OF DAMAGE: A household pest, they feed on cereals and non-food
items such as paste, paper, starch in clothes, rayon fabrics and dried
meats.
CONTROL: Sanitation alone will not eliminate an infestation, although
it may prevent new ones from starting. A large infestation usually means
the house has been infested for some time.
Residual insecticides (use an aerosol) will help to control these pests.
Removing old papers, boxes, books, and clothes from the attic to basement
will help remove food and hiding places. Moth crystals placed in boxes in
the attic will also help.
INTERESTING FACT: They can go for up to one year without food.
Monitoring
Monitoring is best performed by detecting damage caused by silverfish
(Mallis 1982). Book bindings will show minute scrapings. The sizing of
paper will be removed in irregular fashion, and the edges of paper will
appear notched. In cases of high populations irregular holes will be
eaten directly through paper. Other signs of feeding include feces,
scales, and small yellow stains.
Active infestations can be detected by observing the small, dark feces,
which are visible to the eye as well as scales, which are visible through
a hand lens (Mallis and Caur 1982). In addition the feeding activities of
silverfish can be observed by coating a piece of paper with a thin layer
of flour paste and placing it in an area suspected of harboring silverfish.
If silverfish are present, the paper will show small feeding marks.
Two kinds of traps have been used to confirm the presence of silverfish.
The first uses a small jar coated with flour on the inside and tape on the
outside to provide a climbing surface. Jars should be placed in areas of
suspected silverfish infestations and regularly inspected for silverfish,
which will climb in the jar and become trapped (Mallis and Caur 1982).
Conventional sticky traps such as those used for monitoring cockroach
populations can also be used for detecting silverfish (Olkowski et al. 1991).
Thresholds
Due to their small size and reclusive nature, silverfish are seldom seen.
However, their damage can be significant if populations are high.
The decision to intervene should be based on the amount of damage
associated with the silverfish and the confirmation of an active
infestation by the methods described above.
Insecticides
DEKKO Silverfish Paks - Active Ingredient: 20.0% Boric Acid,
for control of silverfish. Economical and easy to install.

Answers to the most asked questions about NIBAN-FG
What is Niban Granular Bait and Niban-FG?
They are granulated baits containing five percent boric acid as the active ingredient and a combination of both protein and carbohydrate attractants.
What insects will Niban Granular Bait and Niban-FG control?
They are labeled for the control of cockroaches, crickets, silverfish, and ants, including carpenter ants.
Does either bait have an odor?
There is no detectible pesticide odor. The only odor is that of the food based attractant.
Will Niban irritate skin?
No.
What is the difference between Niban Granular Bait and Niban-FG?
Both products consist of the same formulation but have one significant difference. Niban Granular Bait contains only coarse particles; excellent for outdoor broadcast and perimeter applications. Niban-FG is made up of very small particles which allows it to be used in any type of dusting equipment. Niban-FG is excellent for indoor crack and crevice treatments.
How can I apply Niban Granular Bait?
With a mechanical spreader, power duster, plunger type duster or by hand.
What type of equipment is needed to apply Niban-FG?
Any type of dust applicator will work. For crack and crevice treatments, a bellows duster works best. For broadcast applications in attics and crawl spaces, the use of a power duster cuts application time considerably.
Can I use Niban-FG outdoors?
Yes. Small ants and silverfish often invade homes from the exterior. They build up in considerable numbers in flower beds, refuse areas, and under chips adjacent to a structure. It is frequently more effective to treat the source of the problem rather than trying to eliminate them after they have entered. Apply in a two-foot band around the perimeter of the home.
How long will Niban remain effective outdoors?
Based on studies, Niban Granular Bait remained effective until it was exposed to between one and a half and two inches of rainfall.
